Some time back I did some studies on Ayurveda and thought of writing about it as I have become An Ayurvedic Consultant as well! And then I found how My Grandfather began his Ayurveda Institute with his father Ayurvedic Vaidya Velum Perera Wickramarachchi.

Early life and education:
Gabriyal Perera Wickramarachchi (Sinhala: ජී. පී. වික්‍රමආරච්චි; 28 September 1889 – 29 March 1975) also known as Ayurveda Chakravarti Pandit Wickramarachchi was a distinguished eminent Ceylonese Ayurvedic physician, author, linguist, senator, lawyer (notary), lecturer and a philanthropist who founded Gampaha Siddhayurveda Vidyalaya which later became Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute of University of Kelaniya.

He received his primary education at Henegama Government School and secondary education at Uttharamulla Pirivena. He entered the Vidyodaya Pirivena in circa.1909 and graduated in oriental languages in 1913 with the title Rajakiya Pandit. In 1917 he sat for the notary exam and became a notary, in that same year he won a scholarship to Jamini Bhushan Ray Ashtanga Ayurvedic Vidyalaya in Calcutta. After three years of studying there he earned his degree of LAMS (Hons) in 1920 and the degree of Kaviranjan from Kaliya Ayurveda Bavan in 1921.

Wickramarachchi Veda Ralahami was a well disciplined devout Buddhist and rendered his service as the Editor of Sinhala Bauddhaya from 1914 to 1917 in request of the Buddhist revival leader Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala. His contribution for Journals, Magazines and Newspapers was enormous. He wrote five to six books on Ayurveda medicines and a route to a healthy life, even today some of his books such as “Bojana Sangrahaya”, “Lakdiva Raktha Roga Sangarahaya” are extremely popular books among the Ayurvedic practitioners and consider them as classics.

ගම්පහ වික්‍රමාරච්චි දේශීය වෛද්‍ය විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ නිළ ලාංඡනය මගින් සංකේතවත් කරයි.

Eleven (11) Departments of study operated to organize the academic activities: Departments of Ayurveda Fundamentals, Anatomy, Dravyaguna, Indigenous Rasa-Bahisajja, Rogavignana, Kayacikitsa, Desheeyacikitsa, Kaumaravurtha & stree roga, Shalya salakya, Languages, and Modern Sciences & Technology.

Review of the curriculum

The curriculum of the Vidyalaya was reviewed to be aligned it with that of the Gujarat Ayurveda University, India.

Declared as a state recognized academic institute of Ayurveda and indigenous medicine in Sri Lanka.

“Dhathovya Cikithsagara” and “Siddhayrveda Rasayanovshada samagama” were established in response to the demand for practical clinical training opportunities of the trainees.

Gampaha Sri Lanka Siddhayurveda Vidyalaya

Founded on 19 July 1929 as the center of learning for the scholars of the Siddhayurveda traditions and indigenous medicine. Popularly known as “Father of Revived Ayurveda”, Ayurveda Chakravarthi Pandith G.P. Wickramarachchi was the founder of this center of indigenous medical studies.

First Board of Management

The first Board of Management of the Vidyalaya was comprised of Vidyodaya Parivenadipathi Rev. Kahave Sri Sumangala thera, the Director of the Vidyalaya Pandith G.P.Wickramarachchi, and educated Ayurveda doctors, Vaidya Donald Obeysekara, Vaidya Velum Perera Wickramarachchi and Vaidya D.S.Jayakody

Origin and Development

Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine is the successor higher educational Institution of Sri Lanka Siddhayurveda Medical College founded by Ayurveda Chakravarthi Pandith Gebrial Perera Wickramarachchi on 19 July, 1929 as the center of learning Siddhayurveda traditions of indigenous medicine.

Ayurveda Chakravarthi Pandith G. P. Wickramarachchi, the founder of Siddhayurveda Medical College, was born on the 20th September 1889. In 1917, he proceeded to Calcuatta Ashtanga Ayurveda Vidyalaya and studied there under Kaviraj Jamini Bhūshana Roy, one of the most eminent scholars of Ayurveda in India. He was graduated with L.A.M.S. degree (Bhishagratna). He founded this institute in his personal land in Yakkala with the support of contemporary leaders of national movement.
